Hunting Park Youth Development
HPYD (Hunting Park Youth Development) advocates for treating violence as a public health epidemic, with prevention as the primary objective. One approach to achieving this goal involves fostering cultural shifts that prioritize hope over despair, promoting a positive outlook for our youth and those who support them. Through mentoring programs and sports, HPYD cultivates trusting relationships between youth and adult volunteers, guiding them towards positive life choices. Continuous positive reinforcement from mentors helps young people develop a strong sense of self-worth.
Today, more than 25 years since its inception, HPYD is a recognized nonprofit organization serving over 100 youth aged 8-18 and supported by 10 adult volunteers in Philadelphia and neighboring communities. Since its establishment, HPYD has offered various programs, including school support, visitation, tutorials, and recreational activities, which have spurred academic and social achievements among its youth participants.
HPYD provides a robust support system for disadvantaged youth, offering an alternative to the negative influences and lack of support they often face. By demonstrating alternative pathways beyond crime and substance abuse, HPYD endeavors to enhance the quality of life for urban youth. Through dedication, consistency, and support, HPYD empowers youth by expanding their access to educational, athletic, and mentoring opportunities.
The organization's initiatives encompass specific endeavors, such as school support and visitation programs aimed at fostering safe and supportive learning environments. Emphasizing the importance of education, HPYD addresses challenges faced by many youth in attaining basic learning skills necessary for higher education. After-school tutoring services are provided to enhance students' academic skills and prepare them for further studies. Additionally, HPYD facilitates the development of interpersonal skills, behavioral modification, and strategic planning through athletic competitions, contributing to the personal growth and maturity of its participants. The program's positive impact is evidenced by the numerous recipients of athletic and academic scholarships it has produced.
